Toronto International Film Festival 2017: Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone Lead The Pack

| August 9, 2017 | 0 Comments

Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) lineup was unveiled at a Tuesday morning press conference, revealing the first wave of independent titles debuting at the 42nd annual Canadian event. The festival, which will occur Septemeber 7-17, 2017, typically serves as great platform for potential Oscar-bait flicks and performances alike to emerge — including Emma Stone’s Oscar-winning performance in La La Land, which premiered at the 2016 festival.

The first announcement includes films from filmmakers around the globe. Canada, the United States, France, Belgium, Sweeden, Spain and the United Kingdom are countries with titles on this year’s lineup, among other international regions.

“Over the years, cinema has expanded and evolved in countless ways, but there’s always one constant — the heart of every film is the story,” said Piers Handling, a press representative who spoke at Tuesday’s press conference. “TIFF provides engaging experiences for our patrons and guests through the diverse films we screen here at TIFF Bell Lightbox 365 days a year.”

Festival representative Cameron Bailey spoke on TIFF’s selection process Tuesday’s press conference, saying, “We rely on an incredibly talented international team of festival programmers who continue to surprise us with the gems they discover every year.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s mother! and George Clooney’s Suburbicon are two of several high-profile titles the festival acquired this year. Other anticipated titles include Emma Stone and Steve Carrell’s Battle of the Sexes, alongside Margot Robbie’s titular role in I, Tonya —  which is based on figure-skater Tonya Harding’s story.

TIFF’s first wave of contenders has proven to be very female-driven, placing several females in the protagonist role and the director’s seat. Mary Shelley is directed by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour, featuring Elle Fanning as the film’s star. Jessica Chastain, who openly complained about the misrepresentation of female movie characters at Cannes Film Festival in May, is set to star in Woman Walks Ahead. Chastain’s flick is directed by British filmmaker Susanna White.

Other familiar female faces will include Angelina Jolie (First They Killed My Father) and Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), but they’ll instead show off their work from behind the camera, tackling the role of film director.

TIFF carefully selected 2017’s lineup, cutting it by 20 percent (roughly 60 films), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first official announcement shows that TIFF will be the host of 25 world premieres, eight international premieres, six North American premieres and eight Canadian premieres. While the “refreshed [and] more tightly curated” festival has only revealed the first half of this fall’s lineup, movie lovers can expect to see the next wave of films surface soon.

TIFF festival ticket packages are on sale now and can be purchased online, by phone (416.599.TIFF or 1.888.599.8433) or in person at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
