The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced on December 9th by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut at The Beverly Hilton.
The Globes, which are scheduled for January 5, 2025 at the same location, are being anticipated not only for the diverse repertoire of thematic and contextual variety, but also as a symbolic return to normalcy in the wake of the industry’s 2023 strikes and subsequent malaise.
Often referred to as the Oscars’ less uptight cousin, The Golden Globes stand as a band apart with its recognition of excellence by genre, and also in highlighting most below-the-line crafts like editing or cinematography.
This year’s show will be hosted by actress and comedian a Nikki Glazer.
Leading the film nominations is “Emilia Pérez” with ten nods, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film’s lead, Karla Sofía Gascón, has made history as the first transgender actress nominated for a leading film role at the Golden Globes.
In the television categories, FX’s “The Bear” leads with five nominations, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
The films recognized for Best Motion Picture (Drama) include “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Nickel Boys” and “September 5.” The titles in contention for Best Motion Picture (musical or comedy) include “Anora,” “Challengers,” “Emilia Pérez,” “A Real Pain,” “The Substance” and “Wicked.”
Actors and actresses with nods in the leading and supporting categories include heavy hitters like: Pamela Anderson, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet, Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Kate Winslet, Jeremy Strong, Edward Norton, Denzel Washington and more.
Special honors for the evening include the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which will be presented to Viola Davis, and the Carol Burnett Award, set to be awarded to Ted Danson.
This year, one this is certain: competition will be fierce and the voters will have tough decisions to make.
The Globes, founded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are comprised by roughly 300 voting journalists, votes that don’t always align with the picks of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which is comprised of 10,500 film industry professionals.
