This year’s BET Awards were hosted by none other than the charismatic Taraji P. Henson. The show opened with a fiery performance by Megan Thee Stallion, setting a high-energy tone for the evening. Will Smith debuted his new single, “You Can Make It” accompanied by gospel icon Kirk Franklin and Sunday Service,  bringing the house down with a dynamic and spiritual set that resonated deeply with the audience.

Adding to the excitement, GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion made a special appearance during their stadium tour, thrilling fans with their electrifying performance. The night also saw a unique blend of country and hip-hop as Tanner Adell and Shaboozey took the stage, surprising everyone by bringing out Millennial favorite J-Kwon, which added a nostalgic touch to the evening.

The evening also celebrated the future of entertainment with the adorable performances of social media stars VanVan and Heiress Harris, who charmed the crowd with their single “Be You.” Meanwhile, Victoria Monét’s performance hinted at her impending rise as a global superstar, showcasing her versatility and stage presence. If you aren’t a member of the “Jaguar Nation” by now,  you better sign your citizenship papers. This woman is the REAL DEAL!

One of the evening’s most poignant moments was the Lifetime Achievement Award tribute to Usher. The tribute featured a star-studded lineup including Coco Jones, Summer Walker, Tinashe, Latto, Marsha Ambrosius, Victoria Monét, Teyana Taylor, Childish Gambino, Chloe, and Keke Wyatt, each artist delivering heartfelt performances that honored Usher’s illustrious career. The emotional depth and sheer talent on display left the audience in awe. Music Moguls Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who discovered the music icon, presented Usher with the award before allowing to take his time to speak from his heart and soul. Unfortunately for folks at home, most of it was censored as Usher was truly delivering off the cuff because he didn’t want a scripted version of the way he truly felt.

The night was not just about performances; it carried an important social message as well. A powerful video message featuring Vice President Kamala Harris and Taraji P. Henson urged everyone to exercise their right to vote, underscoring the event’s commitment to social activism.

The grand finale was a soulful serenade by Lauryn Hill, joined by YG Marley and Fugees alum Wyclef Jean, which brought the audience to their feet and closed the night on a high note. The BET Awards 2024 was a night of celebration, empowerment, and unforgettable performances, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Black culture and entertainment.
