Television, What to Watch
Jan 14, 2013

The 12th season of American Idol is just days away and a lot has happened since Phil Phillips walked off last year with the American Idol crown. With diminished ratings, increased competition from other music shows (The Voice and X Factor), and a whole new cast of judges, the future of American Idol is in doubt.

With the departure of popular judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, the American Idol producers needed to come up with a plan to replace the star power they brought to the show. To address this issue they retained Judge Randy Jackson and Host Ryan Seacrest and added Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban as new judges. It has been reported that American Idolspent over $35 million dollars to acquire the new judges.

The new judges have a tough task ahead of them. The American public really liked both Lopez and Tyler. Many women just watched the show just to see what Jennifer was wearing. She was beautiful and classy at the same time. Other people watched American Idol just to hear what Steven Tyler would say next. He didn’t always make a lot of sense but he was always interesting .

This year the American Idol Road Show will travel to Charlotte, Chicago, Long Beach, New Orleans, New York, Oklahoma City and San Antonio in the hope of finding the next American Idol Superstar. While the bulk of American Idol winners have had commercial success it has been a long time since American Idol has produced a superstar like Kelly Clarkson (Season 1) and Carrie Underwood (Season 4). Phil Phillips is off to a great start but one hit record isn’t enough to proclaim him a superstar

American Idol’s 2-night premiere can be seen Wednesday, January 16th and Thursday, January 17th on Fox. Keep an eye out for my weekly updates!
