ASK OUR GUY: DATING IN LOS ANGELES

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and while Los Angeles may be known as the City of Angels, Paris still reigns as the City of Love. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a guardian angel guiding your way…from now on, just Ask Our Guy!

Q: “Dating in L.A. seems like a nightmare! I’ve noticed the new trend is dating on new media with apps like Tinder. I really want to start off 2014 fresh. Do you think mobile dating can really lead to love?”

– Laura (Santa Monica, CA)

A: What makes you think dating in L.A. is a nightmare? In a city of nearly four million people surely there must be someone for everybody to love—maybe even two or three. If you’re really looking for love, it’s time to chuck the bad attitude. Dating has always been a numbers game, and the numbers are on your side, so think positive while keeping it real.

Putting yourself up on Tinder is a good way to declare yourself ready and eager to get yourself out there, but don’t take it too seriously. There’s a reason it’s known as a hookup app—they’re long on image (Tinder pulls your photos from Facebook), and serves up guys online who are also geographically close to you. That’s good for being impulsive—just be prepared to face a lot of hot and cold responses from dudes who treat it like a video game.

Any online dating service is, at the very least, a great tool to get you out of the house and out meeting people. Strike up a conversation with a guy online and challenge him to meet you somewhere you want to go (An art opening? A walk in the park?). Being proactive is kinda sexy. When they say that love comes when you least expect it, I say that’s when you feel most comfortable with yourself and in the moment. So, practice, practice, practice…
