Maybe we should be doing more to thank Lin Manuel-Miranda? With shows like Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls, Waitress, The Lion King, and more Broadway is soaring into profits.
But it’s not just Broadway experiencing a revival, theaters around the country are seeing an upswing in theater attendance. We couldn’t be happier. Broadway is packing real storytelling power. With diverse casting, dynamic stories, and marvelous performances you are missing the power of live performances if you haven’t gone.
You may be wondering what the numbers are exactly? We’ve got you covered. It was common practice to “pad” the Broadway numbers as far as monetary sales were going, but with results like these, we don’t think it’s necessary. The actual box office numbers for Broadway are staggering. Hamilton, going into its fourth year, takes in more than $3 million a week. (It did $4 million Christmas week 2018.) Meanwhile, To Kill a Mocking Bird hit $1.7 million in a recent week, an astounding number for a straight play. The new musical Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations is bringing in $1.4 million a week and will likely hit $2 million during the summer tourist season. Even the oldest show, The Phantom of the Opera, 32 years and counting….is on track for a strong summer that should push its worldwide gross to nearly $7 billion. Yes you read that correctly. These are just a few examples. Many shows are killing it week after week, with audiences who can’t get enough.
Let us know what shows you’re planning on seeing this summer. NYC isn’t the only home to great theater. If you’re stuck in LA for the summer, don’t shy away from checking out The Pantages, The Ahmanson, or The Geffen.
