Looking for great Indian food in LA? Look no further than Bombay Beach in DTLA.
The restaurant, which has been open since 2018, is run by a husband and wife team, Angat and Gurpreet Gaada who are from Northern India, specifically Mumbai. The name Bombay Beach is a play on their hometown and the restaurant is known for their innovative fusion dishes including their butter chicken, samosas, chicken tikka tacos, incredible vegan tikka masala, tandoori chicken pizza, Peshwari Naan, Lamb Biryani, and more. This restaurant is perfect for a lunch date, and its casual laid back vibe makes you feel right at home.
Of course we kicked off our tasting with their savory Samosas. Can you go to an Indian restaurant and not order Samosas? Is that even legal? The verdict, delicious, with just the right amount of spice.
Next up we had quite the adventure trying Panipuri, which are an Indian food traditionally sold by street vendors. pro-tip pop the entire bitesize snack right in your mouth. These little snacks are filled with a tasty herb concotion that is a bit liquidy and taking a bite will give you a mess. The delicious appetizers are perfect for summer because of their chilled temperature when served. Panipuri are bascially a mix of chickpeas, onions, potatoes, chutney, chaat masala, chutney, and a soupy water known as pani.
Of course, they had Na’an on the menu, but to really kick it up a notch they had garlic na’an which was an absolute must. Just look at this cheesy goodness, we’re drooling again…excuse us.
Next, vegetarians will love Pakora, but honestly everyone should get on this snack train. These lightly fried veggie snacks are an absolute delight. We honestly couldn’t get anough of them.
After aggressively trying almost everything in the appetizer menu we moved onto the main course. To give you all a variety of options we tried their Chicken Tikka Masala and their Lamb Biryani.
Their Chicken Tikka Masala is buttery and delicious. With just a hint of spice, you can turn up the heat if you want to on any of their dishes but medium is a good bet on this one. Are you asking yourself what is Chicken Tikka Masala? Well, it’s a savory roasted chicken breast that is cooked in a tandoor and then sauteed in a creamy tomato sauce with garlic, onion, ginger, white raisins and spices.
We loved the Lamb Biryani, if you want a more savory dish, this is for you. A touch spicer than the tikka masala, this lamb falls apart in your mouth. The Biryani is a roasted lamb with rice that is sauteed with onions, almonds, cashew nuts, raisins, herbs and spices. The result is a perfect savory storm, that is great bite after bite.
We can’t say we’ve had Indian desserts until now. We tried a couple of their offerings and found them to be semi-sweet. If you don’t have a massive sweet tooth these treats might be your match made in heaven. Below you’ll see the Kheer which is India’s rice pudding as well as Rasmalai, which is similar to a ricotta cheese in flavored milk.
