Last night, Doechii became the third female artist ever to take home a Grammy for Best Rap Album.
The Tampa native won for her standout mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal and took the stage beside her mother to thank the fans.
The moment was poignant considering the last woman to win in that category, Cardi B was present to award Doechii with the honor.
As Doechii took the stage she called out that only Cardi B and Lauryn Hill for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had taken home the award before her.
Dressed in a unique Thom Browne design, Doechii accepted her award and shared with the audience, “I know there’s some Black girl—so many Black women—watching me right now. And I wanna tell you, you can do it,” she said through tears. “Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you.”
