FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS NOMINATIONS

PPLA was at the W Hotel in Hollywood to attend the nominations announcement for the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards. Presenters Anna Kendrick, Zoe Saldana, and Common announced this year’s lucky nominees as well as talked with us about what the Spirit Awards mean to them on the red carpet after the announcement. We also caught up with Film Independent Co-Presidents Sean McManus and Joe Welsh about the future of independent filmmaking.

The crowd was eager to find out who would be among this year’s nominees. Some of the highlights included Best Feature announcement for nominees Beasts of the Southern Wild, Bernie, Keep the Lights OnMoonrise Kingdom, and Silver Linings Playbook. David O. Russell who’s previous film The Fighter earned him award accalodates found himself nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his current film Silver Linings Playbook. Stars of that film, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper also took home nominations for Best Female and Best Male Lead respectively, with tough competition from actors Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Smashed and Matthew McConaughey for Killer Joe (he also got a supporting male nomination for Magic Mike).  Indie darlings Rosemarie Dewitt (Your Sister’s Sister) and Brit Marling (Sound of My Voice) were among the nominees for Best Supporting Female and indie staples Sam Rockwell (Seven Psychopaths) and Michael Pena (End of Watch) were among the Supporting Male category.

The announcement also saw nominees for more than $125,000 in grants which will go to the winners of awards which include the 16th Annual Piaget Producers Award,19th Annual Someone to Watch Award, and the Stella Artois Truer Than Fiction Award. It was announced that this year’s Robert Altman Award given to one film’s director, casting director, and ensemble cast will be awarded to the film Starlet. With over 49 films nominated out of 290 submissions, the film’s with the most nominations were: Silver Linings Playbook (5), Moonrise Kingdom (5), Keep the Lights On (4), Beasts of the Southern Wild (4), and Middle of Nowhere (4).
