Women In Entertainment and Writers Guild Of America have teamed up to bring a series of events entitled “In Her Words: Spotlight On Women In Film And Television.” The live event highlights the work of prolific women in their respective fields with a screening followed by a live Q&A.
The Arclight cinemas on Sunset Boulevard provided the accommodations for fans to view two episodes of HBO’s critically acclaimed hit, “Insecure” which has been greenlit for a fourth season. The shows star and creator, Issa Rae, was extremely open and honest about the trials and tribulations that occur when breaking into the entertainment industry.
Issa spoke about almost giving up after receiving numerous rejections to the point she considered moving to Senegal, which is the native country of her father. Her love for creating comedy began while in college when she and some friends made a comedic music video that went viral on campus. The word was out that a new comedy troupe had been born. Enter “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” which premiered on Youtube February 3, 2011.
Issa told the audience that she always knew the content she wanted to create would be relatable to the audience, no matter what executives would try to say in order to change or block the vision from coming into fruition. There have been some strides made in diversification in the media, but there is still a long way to go. “These conversations seem to be recycled every 20 years. These types of panels to speak about inclusion were done in the 60s,70s, 80s… my mom attended these, too.”
Issa has numerous projects in the pipeline, but still values the importance of opening the door and helping others through it as well. If she can’t personally be there as a mentor, she extended the opportunity for people to visit her company Color Creative which assists underrepresented writers to get tools for development in getting projects off the ground through events, workshops, and networking events.
The access to events such as In Her Words gives aspiring and established industry professionals the chance to have an intimate conversation that reinforces why we all do what we love and wonder if the feelings that come along this rocky road are mutual. It’s definitely an evening that sets the mind at ease for aspiring creators!
