Koreatown’s Iconic Selig Building Opens It’s Doors To…..

The Dolly Llama Waffle Masters.

On the corner of 3rd and Western, an intersection that many Angelenos pass through, is a historic building in Koreatown which has recently been restored and brought back to life. The Alvin C. Selig building, a black and gold glazed terra cotta masterpiece was built in 1931 and designed by Arthur E Harvey, a well-respected Los Angeles based architect, also famously known for buildings such as the Wilshire Professional Building, the Villa Carlotta (also recently renovated) and the Chateau Elysee Hotel. Designed with the Stuart Hall Clothing company in mind to occupy a large portion of the corner, its rounded floor-to-ceiling glass corner windows attracted a wide array of customers and was once a beautiful jewel at the corner. In the first few years, the department store flourished with high end clothing and shoes. However, partially due to the Great Depression, this department store ended up closing its doors around 1936. Within one year, Citizens National Bank took over the property and completely renovated the interior and exterior facade of the building to fit a more bank-like standard. As safety and security were the bank’s main concern, the eye-catching corner windows were replaced with square glass blocks and storefronts were eventually closed off. Although this made sense for the new bank, the appearance of the building was changed drastically. The building remained a bank until the early 80’s and since then, has been occupied by temporary businesses that have come and gone. As the years have passed, this beautiful, historic gem was left vacant, abandoned and neglected….until now!
