Hollywood puts out a plethora of movies every year. From that long list of storytelling, a handful emerge that truly encompass the human condition. Here is a list of our top picks in no particular order, of movies based on true stories. 

The Good Lie with Reese Witherspoon shines a light on the Sudanese refugee crisis, and the trials they face once relocating to America.

 

Gerard Butler tackles Machine Gun Preacher with such conviction it is a must see. A story of one man’s journey against the law and his redemption in aiding those in Africa amidst Kony’s civil war.

 

Rachel Weisz is stunning in The Whistleblower, this shocking revelation of The United Nations blind eye to their official’s sex trafficking rings, in international positions of power.

 

Naomi Watts is unspeakably talented in The Impossible. This harrowing true story follows the fight of one injured mother, struggling to save her children post the tsunami which rocked Southeast Asia.

If you’re looking for a feel good true story that brings family together put The Blind Side on your list. Sandra Bullock is perfect casting for this film which reminds us we all need more love in our lives.

Finally, a film which affirms that anything is possible if you put your mind to it is Disney’s Queen of Katwe. Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo are wonderful beside the films true star Madina¬†Nalwanga.

Another film we can’t get enough of is Morgan Freeman in Invictus. Nothing like uniting a country through sports.
