Blink 182 is the moment! After saving the day when Frank Ocean cancelled his Coachella appearance last minute, this 00’s punk rock band royalty is on a roll.
“All The Small Things” was a runaway hit in 1999 when it debuted and it’s still a bop today. The band stepped up to the plate and saved the day after Frank Ocean’s disasterous and unprofessional set at Coachella weekend one. Blink 182 swooped in and delivered a show that reminded everyone why the early 00’s were so iconic. Dramatic hardly covers what must have been a chaotic week for organizers as Frank Ocean pulled out last minute. Frank Ocean was then replaced by Blink-182, whose classic lineup had reunited the Friday of weekend one. In addition to Blink 182 an electronic-music all-star team of Skrilliex, Fred Again.., and Four Tet took center stage to round out what had previously been Frank Ocean’s closing spot.
The band new what was up. Blink 182 took the stage to the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey, setting the mood and letting everyone know, they KNEW. After-all, the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey screams: “Some serious shit is about to go down.”
The band broke up back in the 00’s, but now the band’s reunion with DeLonge after nearly a decade apart followed Hoppus’ 2021 lymphoma diagnosis (the singer-bassist was later proclaimed cancer free) has been well recieved by fans new and old.
While Coachella can be a place where denizens go more for the clout than their love of music, it’s hard to deny the band’s cultural impact when the entire crowd is screaming every single word to “All the Small Things.” Good songs last.
