We’re craving some solid rock n’ roll this week as we gear up to celebrate Independence Day, who better to kick off our weekly playlist than Lenny Kravitz and his enduring hit “American Woman.”
“American Woman” hit the music scene back in 1998, and what a glorious run this single has had. Still an enduring hit today, we knew there was no other music choice with which to celebrate this 4th of July. “American Woman” is actually a cover that was revamped for the upcoming (at the time) Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me movie. Lenny Kravitz has revealed during interviews; “I was called by the people making Austin Powers and they simple asked me to cover “American Woman,” which I thought was odd but I accepted thinking it was an interesting challenge and did my best to change it as much as possible.”
Originally “American Woman” was written by the Canadian rock band The Guess Who in 1969. The original was a huge success and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.
What do you think of this now iconic rock song. Did you know it was a cover of an older hit song? Enjoy your 4th of July, we know one thing for sure, “American Woman” is at the top of our holiday playlist.
