NAOMI WATTS DOES THE IMPOSSIBLE, OSCAR CONTENDER REMEMBERS TSUNAMI VICTIMS

I am sure you all went out to see one or more of the hyped up year-end movies including ArgoLincolnSilver Linings PlaybookZero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables. If you are going to see one more movie prior to the Academy Awards, go see The Impossible, you won’t regret it. In fact, The Impossible is easily one of the best movies of the year.

The Impossible is a true story about a couple Maria Bennett (Naomi Watts) and her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons on Christmas vacation in Khao Lak, Thailand. The couple and their family are enjoying their vacation at the hotel pool when the December 26th, 2004 tsunami hits. The tsunami destroyed the Thailand coast line killing over 200,000 people. The filming of the actual tsunami and the devastation that it causes is absolutely spectacular. Let me make it perfectly clear, this isn’t a disaster movie. It is a story about love, hope, courage, compassion, determination and the will to survive against all odds.

The movie is an emotional roller coaster, that is sometimes painful to watch, but at the same time it is riveting. This emotional story grabs you from the opening minutes of the film and won’t let you go until the very end. If you aren’t overcome with emotion and tears while you are watching this movie you should go see your family doctor because there is a good chance you might be dead!!!

The entire cast is fantastic but the performance of Naomi Watts and Tom Holland, as her oldest son, Lucas Bennett is spectacular. For her efforts Naomi Watts received a Best Actress Academy Award Nomination. I have seen all of the Best Actress performances and while there were some good ones, Naomi’s performance was clearly the best.

Tune in to watch the Academy Awards on Sunday Feb. 24th on ABC.
