Ophelia Movie Review

Ophelia is a new film about to hit your On Demand options, and it is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet told through the eyes of Ophelia.

The film is cinematically breathtaking, with dynamic acting from Daisy Ridley (Ophelia) and Naomi Watts (The Queen). Directed by Claire McCarthy, it is easy to lose yourself within the story. Set in ancient times, but without the hard to follow iambic pantameter Shakespeare loved for his plays, it is a perfect melding of classical and modern storytelling. You won’t find yourself lost in the meaning of dialouge but the ancient settings make you feel as if you’ve been transported to another time.

Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies. Ophelia then, is his great hope. A re-imagining with an ending that leaves you leaning towards hope rather than vengeance, yes in this day and age, it’s exactly what we long to see in cinema. Breathtaking visuals, excellent acting, phenomenal costumes, and a well written script give way to Ophelia. This is one film we can’t recommend enough for your must watch list.
