Nevermind a leaked screener, turns out season 4 of Stranger Things has been spoiled by…a board game?
The creators of Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things are upset following a tie-in game of Monopoly being released that heavily spoils the penultimate season. Images have leaked online from an official Monopoly game tie-in as part of the merchandising being released of the long-awaited new season of the retro sci-fi hit. Netflix wasn’t happy about the mishap. But they weren’t nearly as displeased as the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, who sources say weren’t consulted about the game.
There is a Reddit thread devoted to the leak, which claimed the game was bought at “a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer. Nobody stole it; nobody leaked a sample.” Those purchase details are so far unconfirmed. Retailers are currently advertising Stranger Things Monopoly boards linked to past seasons, though a couple purported copies of the season four version are being advertised on eBay. Yikes!
This is hardly the first time a major entertainment brand has been spoiled by a tie-in toy. Star Wars titles have famously been soiled over the years (such as a Rey action figure with a lightsaber being released before The Force Awakens opened, revealing the character was a potential Jedi). That was a big commotion at the time, and points a finger at how merchandising can spoil story rather than enhance it when not done correctly.
Netflix only recently announced that Stranger Things‘ fifth season will be its last. The show’s creators the Duffers have also hinted that Stranger Things might get a sequel or spinoff series beyond the show’s current story and cast. what do you think? Would you watch sequels or spin-offs? Let us know what you make of this entire fiasco.
