The American Ballet Theater Hosts Their Annual Holiday Gala to Benefit Dance Programs

American Ballet Theatre (ABT) hosted its annual Holiday Gala dinner and performance on Monday, December 16, 2019 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. Attendees enjoyed a one-night-only special dance program by the world-renowned artists of American Ballet Theatre.

The American Ballet Theater’s Holiday Gala included performances by Principal Dancers Isabella Boylston, Misty Copeland, Christine Shevchenko, Cory Stearns, and Devon Teuscher performing scenes from the Company’s extensive repertoire, followed by dinner and dessert with the dancers. The evening was emceed by ABT principal dancer and emerging choreographer, James Whiteside. Proceeds from the Holiday Gala support American Ballet Theatre and its educational programs.

The 2019 Holiday Gala program was a montage of excerpts from classic and new to world ballets. Included were excerpts from the holiday classic The Nutcracker, created by celebrated choreographer and ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, as well as a special sneak preview from Ratmansky’s new, original full-length ballet, Of Love and Rage, which will have its World Premiere at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA on March 5, 2020 and an excerpt from New American Romance created by ABT Principal Dancer, and the evening’s emcee, James WhitesideA group of 23 dancers performed 8 movements;

  • Of Love and Rage (excerpt) – choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, music by Aram Khachaturian, featuring Christine Shevchenko and Thomas Forster
  • The Nutcracker (Act 1, pas de deux) – choreographed by Kevin McKenzie, music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky,    featuring Devon Teuscher and Cory Stearns
  • The Nutcracker (Act 2 variation) – choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, featuring Isabella Boylston
  • A Time There Was (Hunt the Squirrel)– choreographed by Gemma Bond, music by Benjamin Britten, featuring Cassandra Trenary, Zimmi Coker and Gabe Stone Shayer 
  • Swan Lake (Act 2, pas de deux) – choreography after Lev Ivanov, music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, featuring Misty Copeland and Blaine Hoven
  • Let Me Sing Forevermore – choreography by Jessica Lang, songs sung by Tony Bennett, featuring Catherine Hurlin and Aran Bell
