Join us on the Red Carpet for the world premiere of The Chosen‘s cinematic debut in Los Angeles. From short film, to hit tv series, The Chosen debuted season 4 in theaters for a limited time! We were thrilled to join the cast and select fans to chat with the cast and creators all about the show’s journey.
What began as a small dream has become a global phenomenon. The growth of The Chosen and it’s popularity really shows what people are craving and what the possibilites of crowd funding can achieve. The Chosen first debuted in 2019, without much fanfare around the first season. It was a modest but hopeful audience with enough reach to grant the show a second season. Since then, the show has acquired around 400 million viewers (with a goal of 1 billion) and attracted attention from high-profile TV critics all around the globe. One of the most anticipated aspects of Season 4 is the unique distribution method, with all episodes premiering exclusively in theaters. The episodes will be rolling out in cinemas across three batches during February 2024. Episodes 1-3 arrive together on February 1st, followed by episodes 4-6 two weeks later on the 15th. The season then concludes in just under two more weeks with the final two episodes hitting theaters on February 29th.
The series about the life of Jesus created and directed by Dallas Jenkins is about to enter the highest stakes the show has shown yet. As Jesus’s journey gets closer to Jerusalem so do the obstacles him and his followers face. This season is betting on high emotional stakes to drive the point home of how faith, and holding on is what can get you through, even in the darkest of times. Chatting with Showrunner Dallas Jenkins on the red carpet made it pretty clear that we need to hold onto our seats. Season 4 is going to delve into some of the darkest and most emotionally trying journey’s for beloved characters yet. The plot for this season centers on Jesus’s final pivotal weeks before the betrayal of Judas as we are lead towards The Last Supper.
One massive event The Chosen season 4 is the depiction and pivotal miracle of Lazarus being raised from the dead by Jesus. The recent season 4 trailer included a conspicuous shot of an empty tomb, strongly implying Lazarus’s resurrection will be shown, as season 7 has been confirmed to show the resurrection of Christ. This would be a fitting inclusion, as the resurrection of Lazarus directly precedes Jesus fatefully traveling to Jerusalem in the Bible, culminating in his crucifixion and his own resurrection. We playfully asked the actors on the red carpet for their favorite episode, could it correlate to Lazarus’ resurrection episode?! What do you think about the choice for favorite episode? Obviously, the visual foreshadowing of the death and resurrection of Lazarus is prophetic of Jesus’ own fate.
Another storyline in season 4 is the grim fate of John the Baptist. Episode one gets right into the nitty gritty letting viewers know that dark times have fallen on their favorite characters, and the season only progresses in loss as it carries out the narratives of the New Testament. It’s a harrowing season for sure, with dark moments from the New Testament coming to life on screen. As Jesus gets closer to Jerusalem the trials that he and his followers endure become more heartwrenching by the minute. Covering the death of Jesus’ spiritual predecessor who baptized him carries great emotional weight after seasons of John’s questioning and growing his faith. Another pivotal moment to watch out for in Season 4 is Peter’s confession, with Jesus’s equally dark foretelling of his own death. A reminder for viewers that, the creators of The Chosen have taken liberty in reordering many biblical events to suit the purposes of their narrative and message to audiences.
Overall, Season 4 has as much sadness as it does joy. It is an incredible achievement in how far crowd funding can go and the reach it can have when the right team creates the content.
In what feels like an unheard of achievement, The Chosen has a 100% critics score with nine reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 99% with more than 5,000 reviews.
