Captain Marvel came into theaters with a mega punch, exceeding female led superhero box office expections by ALOT. The action packed a punch and the story left us wanting more, and now we hear The Marvels.
Brie Larson who plays the title character Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, was a box office gem. The story didn’t fully realize Brie’s acting potential, locking her in a rather bland story line that focused more on power and less on heart. The CGI and the butt kicking was incredible, while the story itself left us wanting more of “her” injected into this larger than life character. Now with Marvel’s new emotive video montage pointing us towards the future of the MCEU, Captain Marvel seems stripped from the line up in place of The Marvels….sharing space with many ultra-powered versions of the original? Lets back track. “The Marvels” concept came about in Marvel comics as early as 1930, showcasing those with “Marvel” in their title while also including the more powerful super beings within the MCEU. At face value The Marvels seems to include Captain Marvel as well at the newly minted Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, teenage hero who takes her name from Captain Marvel, set to star in her own Disney+ series. The Marvels was originally released in 1994, Marvels was created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross as a way of revisiting, and humanizing, the earliest days of the Marvel Universe. The series is told from the point of view of photojournalist, Phil Sheldon. Marvels retold major events, like the introduction of the original Human Torch and the death of Gwen Stacy, the girlfriend of Peter Parker who was killed by the Green Goblin (we’re actually still in mourning over that scene). These major events were told from the photojournalists pov which, restored a sense of wonder and awe to events that fans had become all too familiar with in the comics. Is that what The Marvels holds in store for us? Are we off grid for wanting another, more dramatic, more emotionally charged stand alone Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson? Let us know your thoughts. The newly curated Marvel trailer is above for reference.
