Starz! has always kept a flair for the dramatic period drama, but in a new turn The Serpent Queen looks equal part comedy to its period drama.

The Serpent Queen follows Catherine de’ Medici, who marries into the French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring in a fortune in dowry and produce heirs. Catherine not only discovers that her husband is in love with an older woman, but also that she cannot conceive children. Half part comedy collides with drama as this historical figure is re-imagined for The Serpent Queen. Catherine de Medici was as nefarious as she was infamous. Against all odds she became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. The trailer teases the harsh things she will do in the name of absolute power.
