The only movie on everyone’s mind this week is Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated West Side Story.
West Side Story looks divine. The trailer manages to make the the film look like the cinematic event of the year, while also disregarding the fact that it’s a musical. It is a musical right? If you don’t know the premise, West Side Story is the story of two teenagers from different ethnic backgrounds (Puerto Rican and Italian) who fall in love in 1950s New York City. The film is very timely, with its themes of love striving to rise above hatred; the fear of immigrants; and the toxicity of racism. The trailer reveals that although, it’s a remake of the 1961 film, Steven Spielberg’s version is not a shot-for-shot copy. It can be seen in the trailer, which has new scenes and different dialogue.
The 20th Century film wrapped in October 2019 but has been awaiting release after being delayed several times due to the pandemic.
