Universal’s Annual Halloween Horror Nights Is Back And They Have New Terrors Just For You

Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) is back with new houses (Monstruos), Dementors luring you down Knockturn Alley, and an all new Purge based stunt spectacular taking over their usual Waterworld show.

Halloween Horror Nights 2023 brings iconic characters from the screen, such as Stranger Things and The Last of Us to life with it’s scary and creative houses that have made the event an annual spooky staple. Those who chase fear and excitement can also step into the unknown with original tales starring some Mexican folklore, classic monsters and much more during this year’s haunts. Despite it not being horror, the Death Eaters from The Wizarding World are some of the best performances going at Universal during the Halloween season. This could be a much bigger draw if they were allowed to roam the entirety of Hogsmeade, instead of regulated to only Knockturn Alley.

Our Favorite Houses?

Wanna play? Our favorite serial killer doll has overthrown a Chucky-themed haunted house, and it’s up to you to avoid being tallied into his kill count. This house had a fun air about it, with this Good Guys Doll popping up to scare thrill seekers. However, this playful space can leave the experience feeling a bit sparse between scenes. But in the end, we’ll take any chance that we can get to come face-to-face with Chucky!

The Last of Us

With a massive fan base and a reputation as one of the best video game franchises, the stakes were high for this haunted house adaption. We felt it was fairly accurate to its original source material and enjoyed how the house developed as we ventured further. From stalkers, clickers, and bloaters, you’ll be met with varying levels of the infected as you follow Joel and Ellie’s journey through Pittsburgh. The close portrayal of this post-apocalyptic tale was a favorite.

Stranger Things

The crew from Hawkins, Indiana has returned for their third HHN appearance, with the first taking place in 2018 and following the events of season one and the second in 2019 that chronicled seasons two and three. Four years and one season later, Halloween Horror Nights 32 tells the story of the Hellfire Club, international adversaries, and a new fearsome foe, Vecna. Stranger Things earns merit for some incredible effects that transport you to the infamous Upside Down, in addition to the moment you are met with season four’s villain.

Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America

Beware of the Brujas and Chupacabras! Filled with scenes that will make you jump, and scream when unsuspecting pieces come to life Monstros was hands down our favorite haunted house at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights. It was fun to learn about other horror tales as we squirmed and took in the incredible work that went into this house.

Taking over the role of the Jabbawockeez dance show after 7 years, the show is pretty straightforward but is a lot of fun! It’s essentially the Purge version of WaterWorld, but with pretty gnarly kills, including a slashed throat stunt that capitulates with a death defying drop into the water. It’s defintely a guilty pleasure and our personal favorite. We give this 5 stars and note it as a must see.
