Upright Citizen’s Brigade is closing its Sunset doors. Co-founders Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh made the announcement Wednesday, noting that the comedic institution has been unable to make mortgage payments during the city’s extended shutdown.
It’s been eight months since the closing all of its New York City locations, now, Upright Citizens Brigade announced Wednesday it has closed its famed Sunset theater due to financial constraints amid the pandemic. The only remaining location is their Franklin Village theater in Los Angeles, California. In Wednesday’s statement, Poehler, Besser, Roberts and Walsh also stated they will continue the process for the theater and school to become nonprofit. UCB also plans to hire a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant in 2021 to work alongside Project Rethink, a think tank consisting of diverse, veteran house UCB performers whose goal will be to develop a plan to restructure and reform the theater and school.
