Writers Guild Awards Nominations Revealed After Delays Due To WGA Strike

Due to the WGA strike of 2023 you can expect the Writers Guild Awards after this year’s Academy Awards, a flip of the script …if you will.

As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, translation: some awards darlings will be missing from today’s nominations. The guild and The Academy mostly (usually) are on the same page for Original Screenplay, with both nominating The Holdovers, May December and Past Lives. The WGA also nominated Air, while the Academy went with Anatomy of a Fall and Maestro. But the Writers Guild also has Barbie on its Original List, whereas the script for 2023’s No. 1 movie is vying in the Adapted category at the Academy Awards next month. How Barbie isn’t an original at The Academy is beyond us.

Meanwhile, the WGA’s Adapted Screenplay nominees are Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Killers of the Flower Moon, Nyad and, in the only agreements with the Academy this year — Oppenheimer and American Fiction.

As a reminder of differences, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries. The WGA’s contenders usually are announced before the Academy Award nominations, but the protracted writers strike led the guild’s change up in its nominations announcement date.

The big nominations in TV are The Crown, The Curse, The Diplomat, The Last of Us and Emmy winner Succession. Its Comedy Series nominations are Abbott Elementary, Barry, Jury Duty, Only Murders in the Building and Emmy winner The Bear.
